A successful film poster is designed in a way which will reach out to the correct target audience making them want to watch the film. To demonstrate a successful good poster I have looked at the poster for the action film 'Avengers'. Straight away just by looking at it, it clearly shows what genre it is. It is clearly an action film poster as it shows the protagonists characters in the poster, with the back ground showing destruction which the protagonists are trying to stop, which connotes danger a common feature of a action film. The main feature of the poster shows the heroes in the picture showing the audience that the protagonists are trying to protect society and defeat the antagonists. This poster has the common conventions of a action film but has more than one hero in the middle. Also the image shows males being presented as the heroes, again a common convention. This therefore could be said to target the male audience more rather than the female audience. However it also has a female hero in the picture which subverts the common conventions showing how the female is powerful in this. This therefore will widen the target audience as females might want to watch it as well meaning higher profits for the film industries.
The top of the poster is has the leading names of all the main characters in the film, all of which are well known and established meaning people will want to see the film as they might enjoy the actors. Also the film title is presented in large, big writing which straight away hooks the audiences eyes making the want to look at the poster and therefore want to see the film. The colours in the background of the image are dark and gloomy which suggests destruction and death. However the Protagonist in the middle (iron man) has brighter colours, which suggests hope. These entice the audience into wanting to see the film.
This poster is key for my own poster as the film like my own is action and this poster will/has helped me design my own poster as I was able to see what conventions they had followed and whether they had changed any.
