Post 32: Magazine review

Below is the magazine review of which I have created for my film:

Post 30 & 31: Conventions of a magazine

Code and Conventions of film magazines:

There are several codes a film magazine follow in order to make it effective, below are a lift of these:

Masterhead - The position of the masterhead is usually in the top-left corner and should be the largest text on the page. The style of the masterhead should reflect the audience.

Image - The image on the front cover should reflect the audience and style of the magazine, the type of shot used is often a mid-shot and the Mise-en-scene should show connotations of the type of magazine it is.

Fonts - There is usually a mixture of fonts used depending on the story, however they are usually kept to a minimum of 3 different fonts. They vary in size, colour, bold/italic, capitalistic etc.

Buzz Words - These entice the audience into the magazine and stories involved. These words are usually 'free', 'exclusive', 'only' etc.

Banner - These are used on the front page of a magazine to give information about the content in the magazine.

Anchorage Text - This is the text which overlaps the main image to explain what the story is about.

Post 29: Research into different film magazines

Film magazine reviews are seen by the film industries as a vital part of distributing their new film as it is a way of getting your film to the target audience. A good review by a film magazine could lead to huge success for that film as more people will be willing to go and watch the film after seeing such good things said about it. However it could also have a reverse effect and could lead to a film being very unsuccessful due to the poor reviews it has received. I have researched into many big film magazines

As a result of this survey it is clear that the majority of Empire's readers are in the age bracket of 15-24. As a result of this film industries can used this to target the wider range of readers which could lead to huge profit for them. Also from the data it is very clear that the majority of readers are male which means they are more interested in action, adventure and violent films. This again helps the industries when targeting their audience.

Demographics are a common feature within these film magazines. Different film magazines such as Total Film target audience is of an higher age to that of empire and is also more even between the amount males and females read the magazine(although males still higher). As a result of these demographics it makes it a lot easier to target those of the different demographics meaning they have a direct way to distribute a new film to the different groups. However it can cause some issues as some people of a higher group than others may read and watch different films to those in the same group.

Post 27: Poster development

Below are a few sketches of my first initial poster designs for our short film. Both provide a straight to point logline and portray a mystery to the audience making them want to watch the film. The colours, character positioning and writing all follow the common convention of an action film poster.

Below is a first draft of my final poster.

Post 26:Annotation of a poster

For this task I have chosen to annotate was from the film 'Captain America'. This film is relevant for my own film poster as it gives me an idea of what to do for my own one. This poster follows the common conventions of an action film and hooks the audience in making them want to watch the film, as it attracts the young adult audience.

Post 25:What makes a good poster?

A successful film poster is designed in a way which will reach out to the correct target audience making them want to watch the film. To demonstrate a successful good poster I have looked at the poster for the action film 'Avengers'. Straight away just by looking at it, it clearly shows what genre it is. It is clearly an action film poster as it shows the protagonists characters in the poster, with the back ground showing destruction which the protagonists are trying to stop, which connotes danger a common feature of a action film. The main feature of the poster shows the heroes in the picture showing the audience that the protagonists are trying to protect society and defeat the antagonists. This poster has the common conventions of a action film but has more than one hero in the middle. Also the image shows males being presented as the heroes, again a common convention. This therefore could be said to target the male audience more rather than the female audience. However it also has a female hero in the picture which subverts the common conventions showing how the female is powerful in this. This therefore will widen the target audience as females might want to watch it as well meaning higher profits for the film industries.

The top of the poster is has the leading names of all the main characters in the film, all of which are well known and established meaning people will want to see the film as they might enjoy the actors. Also the film title is presented in large, big writing which straight away hooks the audiences eyes making the want to look at the poster and therefore want to see the film. The colours in the background of the image are dark and gloomy which suggests destruction and death. However the Protagonist in the middle (iron man) has brighter colours, which suggests hope. These entice the audience into wanting to see the film.

This poster is key for my own poster as the film like my own is action and this poster will/has helped me design my own poster as I was able to see what conventions they had followed and whether they had changed any.

Post 24:Posters specific to your genre

Action Posters which are specific to my films genre

A vital part when marketing a film is the importance of a good poster. A poster is made as a way to hook the audience in and to connect them into the film.
Before designing my own poster for my action film, I looked at other action film posters. The first one i looked at was the poster for the film 'Captain America'. I noticed that the colours used where very dark and dull which suggests to the audience danger and fear. However the shield is a lighter, brighter colour of red suggesting there is hope for the hero to save the day. Also the tagline 'Avenge' in the middle of the man's chest suggests that a hero will arises and defeat the evil characters. The tagline is short/straight to the point.

Other action film posters I have looked at all seem to follow similar conventions. All seem to have the hero in the middle of the poster, they do this to show the audience that the hero is in power and will do anything to defeat the antagonist. All seem to follow similar tagline as well, they all have short and straight to the point in order to hook the audience in and make them want to watch the film.

Below is a print screen from the website Pinterest, which is showing a variety of action movie posters which are specific to the genre I have chosen for my short film. These posters have helped me in the design of my own poster which will advertised on streets, bus stops etc.

Post 23: Poster design

Go to your blog list
This poster of which I have designed would be used on smaller posters such as handouts, at the cinemas and at bus stops. I used photoshop to help me design my poster for the short film.
The fact that the character in the picture is underneath the no stopping sign, presents to the audience the tongue and cheek humor.

Below is the billboard poster or buses posters of which my colleague designed.

This poster is suitable for large adverting such as billboards as shown below. Billboards use landscape images.
